The New Yorker
August 31, 2009

Below is a short review of my show, “Another Room,” written by Vince Aletti and published in The New Yorker in their August 31, 2009 issue.

HALEY JANE SAMUELSON
Outside of fashion, the conspicuously staged photograph has been played-out for some time now. But artifice has its uses, and Samuelson emphasizes its seductive, storybook appeal in a series of theatrical self-portraits. Set in two rooms of her apartment, and using both natural light and digital alteration (the wallpaper changes regularly), Samuelson’s muted color photographs are transparently fake and romantically overwrought: Francesca Woodman undermined by Erwin Olaf. But amidst the clouds of butterflies and dramatic props, there are moments, both lovely and emotionally fraught, that break the surface. When she stands pale-skinned and nearly naked in the light of a window, her yawn is so close to a scream that we don’t know whether to be amused or alarmed. Through Sept. 12. Zoom Magazine
August 28, 2009

Below is a small blurb regarding my show “Another Room” found in Zoom Magazine, an Italian international fine art photography publication.

A new series by Haley Jane Samuelson entitled “Another Room” in which she dissects the dualism and conflicts of her internal being that is balanced between the soul of a little girl and that of an adult. A palpable struggle with ghosts from the past, the present and the future. It is a voyage in search of herself through confrontation with others. Photographically speaking, her reference points remain Cindy Sherman and Sally Mann—who are able to document their lives in a non-documentary style—but also Francesca Woodman with her portraits from the 1970s during her brief-but-prolific life. Like Woodman, Samuelson uses her body to express what she feels and to promote a delicate and sensuous feminine figure that is only photographed in natural light inside an apartment. The wallpaper on the walls is changed for each shot and objects (cage, ball, recorder) become symbolic metaphors of her daily life.
